Icons for Personal Veneration

Such small devotional icons were used by individuals as offerings to the church or as devotional items to a patron saint. Placed at the ground level of the Iconostasis, these icons not only personalized the large screen, but acted as intermediaries between the believer and the Divine. Shown here are priests placing and praying with such icons, as others approach a door that leads to the sanctuary. This left door of the Iconostatis leads into the chapel of the Prothesis where the priest prepares the bread and wine at the beginning of the Liturgy. Hanging sanctuary lamps provide the light for this intimate setting and their light reveals the Divine Presence.
